INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT & PATHOGEN-FREE ENVIRONMENT

AR_Yellow-TapeThe established Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and pathogen-free environment are part of our food safety program to prevent food contamination by pests and pathogens. IPM is a broad based approach that integrates methods to control pests, emphasizes the healthy growth of a crop with minimal disruption to agro-ecosystems, and minimizes risks to human health, beneficial and non-target organisms, and the environment. IPM and pathogen-free procedures are monitored daily by our knowledgeable pest management team. The goal of this program is to maintain a humane, safe, and clean environment for cultivating Alexander Ranch produce.

TESTING

AR_LabThe safety of our produce at Alexander Ranch is our highest priority. In addition to third party testing twice a year through Primus Labs, our food safety program includes thorough in-house monitoring and testing for pathogens. We have invested in a state-of-the-art laboratory for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing, a highly sensitive and accurate method for detecting pathogens by testing for their DNA. Consistent testing using this leading edge technology gives Alexander Ranch the highest confidence in our produce.

TRACEABILITY

AR_Yellow-TapeAlexander Ranch Inc. has a traceability and recall program designed to trace and recall any product that may have a food safety concern. Alexander Ranch produce is packed within minutes of harvest and cooled. Each clamshell is sealed and labeled with lot number, pack and best by dates, Universal Product Code (UPC) barcodes, and Global Trade Item Numbers (GTIN) for product tracking throughout the supply chain to the marketplace. At Alexander Ranch, protecting public health is our top priority.

Non-GMO Project Verified Seal

NonGMO-LogoAlexander Ranch produce is verified as compliant with the Non-GMO Project Standard. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms that have been manipulated through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology which allow DNA from one species to be inserted into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plants, animals, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or traditional crossbreeding methods. A growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, detrimental effects on biodiversity and environmental health, and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights. The Non-GMO Project offers North America’s only independent, third party verification for products produced according to rigorous best practices for GMO avoidance. The Non-GMO Project is committed to preserving and building sources of non-GMO products, educating consumers, and providing verified non-GMO choices. We support your right to know and trust what is in your food and to choose Non-GMO.

CERTIFICATIONS

Alexander Ranch has been awarded audit verification, certificates, and superior ratings in food safety for our growing and packing facilities: USDA GAP and GHP Audit Verification, HACCP Food Safety Certification, Primus GFS Certification, and the Non-GMO Project Verification Seal.

USDA GAP & GHP Audit Verification

The demand for food safety assurance in the U.S. fresh produce market has led growers and food handlers to adopt Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Handling Practices (GHP) to verify that production and handling practices are in accordance with recommended safety guidelines from the farm all the way through to the marketplace. GAP and GHP verify that fruits and vegetables are produced, packed, handled, and stored in the safest manner possible. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are developed and incorporated into the GAP program, providing guidance with respect to potential points for contamination and preventative or corrective measures to mitigate their effects.

USDA-LogoThe GAP and GHP audit verification program is operated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to verify that farms use GAP and GHP. Created in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln as “The People’s Department,” the USDA provides leadership on food, agriculture, natural resources, rural development, health, and nutrition. USDA GAP and GHP audits verify adherence to the recommendations made in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Guide to Minimize Microbial Food Safety Hazard for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables and industry recognized food safety practices. As producers of fresh produce, we accept with confidence the responsibility of food safety and the continued observance of best practices at Alexander Ranch.

HACCP Food Safety Certification

HACCP-CertHazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a food safety management system designed to prevent food contamination from microbiological, chemical, and physical hazards. The HACCP approach focuses on preventing food safety hazards by assessing the entire production process from cultivation, harvest, storage, and distribution and applying preventative controls at critical points along the production process. HACCP certification at Alexander Ranch demonstrates our commitment to food safety that meets regulatory specifications and customer requirements. HACCP allows Alexander Ranch to offer a safe product to its consumers, protecting their health and life.

PrimusGFS Certification

Primus-LogoIn today’s marketplace, food safety verification and confidence are critical. Primus Labs, our third party auditor servicing the fresh produce industry, is a global leader in food safety. Over the last few years, retailers and food service companies have pushed for auditing schemes that are accepted worldwide. This drive for standardization created the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) for auditing companies to benchmark their schemes against GFSI standards and compliance requirements. PrimusGFS is a Global Food Safety Initiative recognized audit scheme whose audits include GAP, GHP, and HACCP and total produce supply chain coverage. The GFSI recognition of the PrimusGFS scheme helps move the produce industry one step closer to the desired goal of global food safety harmonization.
